How to Grow Your Whatnot Viewership from 0 to 100

The step-by-step playbook for getting your first 100 concurrent viewers — covering scheduling, raids, giveaway strategy, and Whatnot's Promote Tools.

Getting from 0 to 100 concurrent viewers is the hardest jump on Whatnot. After that, the algorithm helps. Before that, you're on your own. Here's the playbook that actually works.

Phase 1: 0-10 Viewers (Weeks 1-2)

Your first 10 viewers will come from three sources: existing followers from other platforms, friends/family, and the community you've been networking with.

  • Promote on socials. Share your upcoming show on Instagram Stories (with link button), TikTok, and anywhere you have a following
  • Leverage existing customers. If you sell in person, at markets, or on other platforms, tell those customers about your Whatnot shows
  • Ask sellers you've modded for to mention your show or raid you

Don't judge your show by 10 viewers. Judge it by whether those 10 had a good time and will come back.

Phase 2: 10-30 Viewers (Weeks 3-6)

This is where consistency matters most. Show up at the same days and times every week. Your regulars start bringing friends. Word of mouth builds.

  • Consistent schedule. Same days, same times. People can't come back if they don't know when you're live
  • Raids from other sellers. A raid from a seller with 200 viewers can instantly triple your room. Build relationships and raid each other
  • Giveaways at three points: start (attract), middle (retain), end (reward). Keep them modest — even $1-5 items create engagement
  • Greet every single person. At 10-30 viewers, you can actually have conversations. That personal touch is your advantage over bigger sellers

Phase 3: 30-100 Viewers (Weeks 6-12)

Now you're visible enough for Whatnot's tools to make a difference.

  • Promote your show. Whatnot's paid promotion gets your show into the browse feed. At this stage, the investment pays off because you already know how to retain viewers — you're not just buying empty views
  • Community Boost. Your loyal buyers can contribute to boosting your show's visibility. On average, promotion tools bring in 30% more first-time buyers
  • Show variety. Mix up your format — themed nights, speed rounds, mystery lots. Give people a reason to tune in for THIS specific show
  • Time slots matter. Test different times and track viewer counts. Some categories perform better at certain times. Find your sweet spot

What NOT to Do

  • Don't buy viewers. Fake engagement hurts your metrics and Whatnot monitors for it
  • Don't spam other sellers' chats with "come to my show." That's a fast way to get blocked and damage your reputation
  • Don't give up after 3 shows. The sellers who are at 1,500 viewers today were at 10 viewers six months ago. Consistency compounds

The Algorithm Cheat Sheet

Whatnot's algorithm favors:

  • High viewer retention (people staying, not just joining and leaving)
  • Active bidding and purchasing during shows
  • Fast shipping and good seller metrics
  • Consistent streaming schedule
  • Strong performance in your first few shows (new seller boost)

Do these things and the algorithm works for you. Skip them and it works against you.
